The Stay Command
The stay command will help you have control of your dog at all times. A well trained dog will learn that stay means to hold whatever position he is in whether he is sitting, lying down or on his back.
Put your dog on a lead and stand next to him. Command him to SIT and don’t move. When he is still, say “STAY” and reward him for sitting still. If he moves, place him back in position and start again.
Practise until your dog will sit for a minute by your side and include a hand signal which is an open palm. Be patient..
Next, have your dog sit next to you and take a step back and you give the command and hand signal to STAY. If he sits on his mark, immediately tell him “YES” and reward with a treat. If he breaks, say UH-UH and put him back on the starting mark.
Gradually increase distance on lead until you are confident that your dog has understood the request. Gradually add distractions such as noise or other people walking in the area. Shower with praise and treats when he doesn’t move.
Be sure to master on lead over several sessions before practicing off lead in confined areas of the house and garden.
